More Local Information

The castle is cloaked in some mysterious history: built in 1932 as a monument to a beautiful lady, used as a luxury hotel, sanatorium, and later as military HQ and radio station; it was fortified during the Civil War: bullet-proof window shutters and trap door are extant. Three entertaining writers have described life in the surrounding Alpujarras: the classic C19th Spaniard, Pedro Ruiz de Alarcon:Journey through the Alpujarras (1870s); Gerald Brennan -(of Bloomsbury Group connections)South from Granada (1920s);Chris Stewart: Driving over Lemons (and its 2 sequels: life around Orgiva in 1990 - today). All well worth a previsit read; available in English paperback.
Human night life:Orgiva boasts 10 discos. Fiestas - ie free eats and dancing available - somewhere within 20 mile range most nights in July-August.

Walking is excellent - from gentle to hardy: up through 7 climatic zones to 3480m Mulhacen peak in 2 days ('luxurious' refuge at 2500m); or a level walk, along the official GR7 path West to Faro, East to Athens, at 1000m through the Alpujarra, only 1 hour's walk up from the castle; or down into the Orgiva olive forest trails; and many other walks near Moorish water channels (acequias)throughout the Alpujarra.
The garden teems with birds to hear and watch, from roof or garden hides: rare warblers and finches; also nightingale, nightjar, unusual pure black starlings, visiting orioles and bee-eaters; owls and occasional falcons.Binoculars useful. Local honey is sweet: rosemary, holm-oak, orange blossom, wild-lavender: worth trying;inexpensive from the Herbolario in Lanjaron.
Garden and wild hillside up from castle is an adventure playground for young children: exotic colouful insects large and small. 2-3 varieties of bats visit. Grapes of 13 varieties ripen in August.
