Rolling hills blanketed with oaks and evergreens. Fields of golden wheat alternating with rows of brilliant sunflowers. Lazy rivers meandering across fertile valleys. Great food – seasonal and locally produced, with equally good wines to wash it down. And Romanesque churches, medieval villages and renaissance masterpieces to keep you entertained should you so desire. Although this idyllic description – straight out of a Frances Mayes book – could apply to any number of central Italian hideaways, I am writing about the view out the window of my home, Pergolaccio, outside of Todi, in Umbria, Italy.

Pergolaccio a stone farmhouse located just ten minutes from Todi, is situated on three acres of olive groves atop a hill over looking breathtaking views of the unspoiled Umbrian countryside and farmland. The area immediately surrounding the house is planted with an herb garden, flowering bushes and vines and over 50 varieties of antique roses. There is a shady pergola where you can dine outside, a wood burning barbecue and pizza oven and a vegetable and cutting garden bordered by a grape arbour and fruit orchard. The swimming pool is nearby, but not visible from the house. The pool is located on the old threshing ground and takes in magnificent views out over the valley. There are two spacious master suites, with ensuite bathrooms. Three double bedrooms share a full bath. There is also a full bath located off of the ground floor living room.
The master suite, located on the second floor, incorporates a sitting area with fireplace, private terrace, and full bath with double sinks, bath and shower all decorated with hand painted tiles from Vietri.
Also on this floor are two double bedrooms, one with two twin beds and one with a queen size bed. These two bedrooms share a full bath.
The top floor is reached by a staircase from the 2nd level. Here two twin beds and book lined walls make this a very comfortable, and private, bedroom. This room shares the bath on the 2nd floor.
The second master suite is reached from it's own separate entrance and is located at the lowest level of the house. A linen draped canopy bed makes this one of the most romantic rooms in the house. There is a sitting area, t.v., phone and full bath.
Pergolaccio’s foundations probably date back to the fifteenth century and years of additions and changes have given the building a complex aspect that we have tried to retain. Domenico, an architect who specialises in this type of restoration work, changed very little of the exterior. The interior was restored to provide comfort, while using traditional materials wherever possible.
The building was originally a two family home, with two separate hearths, or kitchens, on the second floor. One of the first things we decided was to locate our new kitchen, which we knew would be the most used room in the house, on the ground floor. We decided that we should join two separate rooms, originally animal stalls, to form our large and open kitchen, including a seating area as well as a working zone.
