Montone is a very picturesque medieval village dating back to the 1200's which sits at the summit of a small mountain 500 meters above the Tiber Valley. It is a fortress town and as such is completely encircled by a high stone wall. My houses are situated on top of the wall and have panoramic views of the whole Western sky, the sunny South, the mountainous North, and towards the East over the red tile rooftops of Montone.

The rental property, which is next door wall-to-wall to my three-story stone house, has two bedrooms, each with views of the beautiful surrounding landscape, a very comfortable sitting room, a well-equipped kitchen/dining room with a wood-burning fireplace which seats four, a bathroom with tub and shower, sink, toilet and bidet. There is an endless supply off hot water in the apartment and central heating throughout. There is also a little front garden and an independent entrance to the apartment itself.

Everything is on hand for a pleasant and convenient life. There are two grocery stores, a bakery, two fruit and vegetable shops, two butcher shops, a modern pharmacy, a clinic with two doctors on duty five days a week, two bars, five restaurants, two hotels, a post office, a bank where you can cash travellers checka and use the ATM machine, a newspaper and magazine shop, a linen and lingerie shop, an antique shop, a very pretty jewellery shop, twelve churches, nine nuns and two priests. There are also a gasoline station. All of this in a village of less than 1600 souls!!

Montone has two museums of quality: Museo Civico di San Francesco which has fine examples of painting by Perugino, Bonfigli, and other Umbrian masters as well as very rare wooden sculpture from Medieval times; and a small ethnological collection on African art and culture called: Museo Tamburo Parlante. Many important art centers are close by such as Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Gubbio, Cortona, Arezzo, Sansepolcro, Todi, Spoleto and Siena. Florence and Rome are only one and a half to two hours drive.
