Villa Holidays in Historical Falerone - Marche Italy
Falerone steeped in Roman historyEnjoy a villa holiday in historical Falerone. Falerone, at first glance, just another pretty hilltop town, has a colorful history. In 31b.c. the roman town of Faleria or Falerius Picenus was built. It had a theatre (which hosts plays and ballets in summer) an amphitheatre, baths, villas and tombs, the ruins and remains are now protected as an archeological park.
The best statues and countless interesting roman artifacts went to the Vatican Galleries and other museums, a beautiful statue of Venus is in the Louvre. However an interesting collection of the remaining finds is displayed in the village museum (0734 719813). At some point the city was abandoned and Falerone town moved to the hill top, but in modern Piane di Falerone. When your not sipping a gin and tonic by the pool in one these grand holiday villas, visit the original roman town in the valley, many farmhouses boast Roman foundations and original Roman walls, others have roman columns supporting their loggias. And it is possible to see inscribed marble from the original Roman town used for building in the stone walls of local farmhouses.
Visit Beautiful FermoFalerone is a short distance from Fermo, a beautiful town with a busy central piazza which hosts the Palio dell' Assunta, a lively pageant on the horseback with parades and costumed locals. Its web of streets is lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings. The town also has a first century underground complex of cisterns, the Piscina Epuratoria Romana, akin to a flooded cathedral, to supply the Roman Imperial fleet with fresh water. Enjoy a fabulous family holiday and rent a villa direct from ther owner in this beutiful and historically interesting part of Marche.

Falerone main square is graced with the church of San Fortunato which was begun in 1287. Well worth seeing is the painting by Vittore Crivelli (1479) of the Madonna and child with two angels inside the church, and the interesting 15th century Loggetta dei mercanti.
